This pendant is fabricated from 14k yellow and white gold wire with an opal doublet free-form.  The pendant measures  23.5mm in length.

I first made this pendant with only a curve of metal on the left side.  It looked great on paper, but I was most unhappy with it in reality.  It lacked balance.  I started playing with additional lines and shapes, and the next thing I knew I had a heart.  It had much better balance and I was happy again.

The pendant features an opal doublet.  What is a doublet you might ask?  A lot of times opal grows in really thin veins, and the opal is too thin to cut and use in jewelry.  When this happens, we can use the beautiful pieces by backing them with another stone.  The two stones are bonded together and then cut into shapes, thus the term, opal doublet.  The stones we purchased are bonded onto icky looking opal called potch, which is readily available in thick pieces.  It doesn't matter that the back side isn't pretty, as it is covered up with the bezel, and is really only there for functionality.
